4th of July and Carne Asada
As we all get ready to celebrate the 4th of July holiday with friends and family, I got to thinking about the traditional image of the backyard BBQ filled with hot dogs, hamburgers and fireworks:

That image, while familiar, is very foreign to me. That’s not how I will spend my 4th of July. Actually, it was never the way
I ever spent any of the 4th of July holidays I can remember. As I think about my personal 4th of July plans, a very different image appears:
– Carne asada instead of hot dogs
– Pastelitos de guayaba instead of apple pie
– Queso ranchero and tortilla chips instead of potato chips and dip
Bud Light’s recent ad campaign, running here in L.A., I think is a better representation of my reality (and the reality of most Angelenos):

Some food
for thought as you enjoy some ceviche and a tamale to celebrate our nation’s independence.
