How big is the LGBT market in the U.S.?
With all the 2010 Census numbers coming out and so much talk about the growing multicultural population (Hispanics, African Americans, Asians, etc.) one group that often times gets lumped in by marketers is missing from the conversation: the LGBT community.
The reason is that the U.S. Census does not ask respondents about their sexual orientation (for somewhat obvious reasons). So what are marketers to do?
Well, the Williams Institute UCLA’s School of Law recently published some research showing that the LGBT population is estimated to total 9 million.
You can download the entire report here.
There is some interesting data in the report, including:
– The LGBT population represents 3.5% of adults in the U.S.
– Those who identify as bisexuals slightly outnumbers those who identify as gay or lesbian
– Women are substantially more likely than men to identify as bisexual
