Hispanic Social Networking
Tuesday’s post about Hillary Clinton joining MyGrito.com got me to thinking about Hispanic social networking specifically, and social networking generally.
Since NewsCorp bought MySpace for a ton of cash, everybody’s wanted to be the next ones to cash in on social networking. There’s Facebook, which is this year’s flavor of the month, and LinkedIn, for professionals (read: old people), and Dogster (really) and … so on.
A lot of sites have launched to take advantage of this flood. Others have added social networking functionality to already existing sites. The availability of plug-and-play tools makes it very easy for Web. 1.0 sites to go 2.0 very quickly. Lots of sites that used to be largely message boards are also repositioning themselves as social networks, which is kind of what they already were, without the individual hompeages.
Everybody’s getting in. And why not? With all the buzz around online marketing and MySpace and Facebook and all the rest, why not roll the dice and see if you can become an instant millionaire and party like it’s quite literally 1999?
It’s hard to say how the social networking thing will shake out. Maybe the market will continue to fragment and everyone will be in five or six or ten social networks for each of their different interests (and pets?). Maybe Facebook has established a walled garden and everybody else is doomed. Maybe social networking is a fad and will go away.
In the meantime, there are a whole lot of options in Hispanic social networking. I’ve listed the ones I’ve found. I won’t give any opinions because I know people involved at several of them.
They’re arranged in alphabetical order. Some of them are social networking or Web 2.0 only in a very loose sense.
Did I miss any?
